You know that feeling when September rolls around? It’s like someone hands you a clean slate. Maybe it’s the years of back-to-school conditioning, but every September, I feel that urge to reset. As someone juggling both business and study life, I know how easy it is to slip into hustle mode, reworking plans, chasing goals, and trying to keep it all together. But lately, Psalm 23 has been on my heart, especially those verses about green pastures and still waters.
What if this September, instead of just reorganising our calendars or buying new notebooks (guilty), we actually let God lead us into a deeper kind of reset?
Christian Student Guide: 5 Faith-Filled Tips
Here are five things I'm trying this month. Maybe they'll resonate with you too.
1. Rest (Yeah, I Know, Easier Said Than Done)
God makes us lie down in green pastures. Did you catch that? Makes us. Sometimes I wonder if He knows we're too stubborn to rest unless we're forced to.
I used to think rest was what happened when I finally collapsed at the end of a long day. But real rest? That's different. It's trusting that the world won't fall apart if I step away from my phone for a few hours.
What I'm trying: One evening a week, I'm going completely screen-free. Last week, I had the best conversation with my brother in months. Who knew?
2. Actually Talk to God (Not Just When Things Go Wrong)
Still waters don't just appear. Jesus leads us there, but we have to be willing to follow. I've noticed I'm really good at praying when I'm stressed, but what about when things are going well?
It's like only calling your best friend when you need something. Not cool.
What I’m trying lately: Giving God the first five minutes of my day, before emails, orders, or even checking my phone. As a small business owner, my mornings can get chaotic fast. But I’m learning to start with, “Good morning, Jesus. Help me not be a disaster today.” And honestly? He meets me right there, in the honesty and the effort.
3. Feed Your Soul (Not Just Your Instagram Feed)
We’re pros at staying physically hydrated but what about spiritually? I can sip through a whole water bottle while replying to DMs or packing orders, but when’s the last time I sat with Scripture just because I wanted to, not because it was part of a to-do list?
Jesus called Himself the Living Water. And if I’m always feeling thirsty, for approval, sales, the perfect aesthetic, maybe I’m just looking in the wrong place.
What I’m trying lately: Every time I reach for my water bottle, I pause to recall a verse or thank God for one thing, big or small. It’s simple, but it’s changing how I move through my day. Less striving, more soul-filling.
4. Make Room for Worship (Beyond Sunday Morning)
Don't get me wrong, I love a good Sunday service. But worship shouldn't be confined to one hour a week with perfect lighting and a killer sound system.
Sometimes worship is blasting Maverick City while I'm doing dishes. Sometimes it's sitting in my car after a hard day and just being honest about how I'm feeling.
What I'm trying: I'm blocking out one hour each morning that's just for me and Jesus. No agenda, no perfect playlist. Just showing up and seeing what happens.
5. Don't Do This Alone (Community Is Everything)
Here's what I've learned the hard way: trying to grow spiritually by yourself is like trying to do a group project solo. Technically possible, but you're missing out on so much.
God restores our souls through each other. Through the friend who texts you a verse at exactly the right moment. Through the person who notices when you're struggling and doesn't let you brush it off with "I'm fine."
What I'm trying: I texted three friends yesterday and basically said, "Hey, want to help each other not be spiritual disasters this month?" Two of them said yes immediately. The third one said, "I thought you'd never ask."
Here's the Thing...
The world is constantly telling us to hustle harder, optimise everything, and figure it all out on our own. But Jesus? He's over here saying, "Come on, let's go to the quiet place. Let me show you how to actually live."
This September, I'm choosing to follow Him to those still waters. Even when (especially when) it feels counterproductive.
